Iron Dog Snowmobile Race

The Iron Dog, known as the World’s Longest, Toughest Snowmobile Race is divided into two classes. The Pro Class is a 2,000 mile race that begins in Big Lake, Alaska on the third Sunday of every February, and ends in Fairbanks. The Recreation Class begins two days prior to the Pro Class, and they finish in Nome. On the Wednesday following the race start, there is a halfway banquet in Nome which is held by the Iron Dog committee every year. For more information contact Iron Dog Headquarters at (907) 563-4414. Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race

The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, also known as the "Last Great Race on Earth" begins in Anchorage, Alaska, and ends in Nome. The first musher usually arrives into Nome about nine or 10 days after the official race start. The ceremonial start takes place in Anchorage, Alaska on the first Saturday of every March, and the official start begins the following day in Wasilla or Willow, Alaska. The Iditarod Awards Banquet usually takes place the third Sunday of March. Nome-Golovin Snowmobile Race

This 200 mile long race is held on the second Saturday of March. Racers compete for the fastest time from Nome to Golovin, and back to Nome. Registration and entry fee required for this event. For more information, contact Matt Tomter at (907) 443-7533.
Bob Beardsley Memorial Mini-Mukluk Marathon

This event, sponsored by the Nome Rotary Club, occurs on the second Sunday in March at the Nome Recreation Center. Everyone is welcome to participate in this five mile fun run/casual walk! Cannonball Run

The Cannonball Run snowmobile race covers over 120 miles! The race is sponsored by the Bering Sea Lions Club, and is held each year around the third or fourth Saturday in April. This is the ninth annual Basketball Camp for Boys & Girls for grades 3 through 9. The games will be held at the Nome Beltz High School Gymnasium. Stroke & Croak Triathlon
June 6 at 1:00, registration at noon
This triathlon usually takes place the weekend after Memorial Day. This athletic event encourages Nomeites to come out of hibernation & get into shape! Register and join others for a one mile swim in the indoor pool, a four mile run outdoors and an eight mile bike ride. Enter as a single or as a team. The entry fee is $25, and includes a T-shirt. Miss ANB Pageant

The Miss Arctic Native Brotherhood (ANB) Pageant may be back! Contestants must be at least 1/4 Alaskan Native, 18 to 24 years of age, never married, and no children. Any young ladies that are interested in this event must register by June 11th. If there are no registrants, then there can be no pageant, so please sign up early! Midnight Sun Festival

The Midnight Sun Festival is an annual event held in Nome to celebrate 22 hours of direct sunlight! The celebration begins the weekend closest to the summer solstice (June 21). Enjoy a parade, mock bank hold-up, BBQ chicken feed, softball tournament; craft fair, Polar Bear Swim, etc.
Midnight Sun Folk Festival

The Midnight Sun Folk Festival is part of the Midnight Sun Festival weekend. Activities include: Tuesday night contra dance, Friday night guest band concert, Friday night jam session at Airport Pizza, a musical main stage event all day Saturday with craft and food vendors, and Saturday night guest band performance at the Board of Trade Saloon. The 2010 guest band for this 10th annual festival is Crooked Still. Visitors to Nome are welcome to perform at Saturday's main stage event (no recorded music, please), but must sign up in advance. Midnight Sun Annual Bank Robbery

Polar Bear Swim

2010 Midnight Sun Nome River Gold Dust Dash

This is a four mile run/walk/jog on the beach. The race will take place at East End Beach. All participants receive a t-shirt. First and second place finishers receive a gold nugget! Nome River Raft Race

This annual event takes place on the first Sunday closest to the summer solstice. Try your skill at outrunning other race participants aboard a homemade raft down a five mile stretch of the Nome River! The race begins on the Kougarok Road, at mile 13.5, and ends around mile 8. Certain raft restrictions apply. Civil fun is encouraged! Water balloons and squirt guns may be used between rafters, and all participants must be submerged under water at the finish line! The first place team is honored with a ceremonial honeybucket! The race is sponsored by the Bering Sea Lions Club. For more information email John Handeland at johnh@nome.net.

Anvil Mountain Run

This is a 17K run from Front Street to the top of Anvil Mountain (1,100 ft) and back again. The event begins and ends in front of City Hall. The event starts at 8:00am, and must be completed in 5 hours! Trophies are awarded for the 1st, 2nd & 3rd place overall, first woman to finish, first “16 years old & younger” to finish, and the first “50 years & older” to finish. Poor Man’s Paradise

This “golden opportunity” usually takes place on the third Friday in July. Old fashioned gold mining skills are featured in this gold panning contest sponsored by Gold Prospectors of America & Rasmussen’s Music Mart. Each contestant receives pay-dirt containing the same amount of gold. The person who pans all the gold in the shortest time is the winner! This event takes place every year on Labor Day. Bathtubs, YES BATHTUBS, mounted on wheels race down Front Street! Each team must have five members, one in the tub with bubbles in sight! Suspenders & hats are mandatory apparel. Finishing teams must have a bar of soap, towel, bath mat & at least 10 gallons of water in the bathtub. Meet in front of City Hall at noon! Rubber Duck Race

This race occurs every year on Labor Day. Hundreds of numbered rubber ducks are tossed into the Snake River next to Bering Air. The first three ducks to cross the finish line win cash prizes for their ticket owners! The finish line is located at the Snake River bridge next to the Power Plant. Fireman’s Carnival

Sponsored by the Nome Volunteer Fire Department, this carnival is held annually at the Nome Recreation Center on the first Saturday of every December. Raffles and Bingo are played by folks of all ages, and winners take home hams, turkeys, stuffed animals, toys, household items or the grand prize of a snowmobile!
